Introduction:

The title Execution of Justice raises interesting issues concerning justice and injustice in the USA. The tragic events that both the play and video documentary explore point to a need to find ways to negotiate questions of difference and to educate the public about the value of diversity and inclusion.

Learning Objectives:

By participating in this module, a student will be able to:

1. Identify common themes of both the play and the video documentary.

2. Summarize the negative consequences of a jury system that is unjust to people who are deemed “different.”

3. Articulate the positive contributions that Harvey Milk stood for and the negative consequences of Dan White’s lawless act that led both to Milk’s death and eventually the death of Dan White.

4. State the contribution of the play to commemorating the importance of this historic event in the struggle for equal rights.

Download and read the Viewers Guide to The Life and Times of Harvey Milk

See The Life and Times of Harvey Milk a documentary leading up to the events depicted in the play. A copy of the video is available in the media center in the basement of the main Library. Of course it may be purchased online.

Read Execution of Justice. A copy of the play is included in the Bel Jean packet. Take a look at the Study Guide for Execution of Justice The study guide will help you digest the many different aspects surrounding the play.

9.1 Download and copy and paste the Execution Worksheet and as you did with previous worksheets created a link from your homepage and paste the contents into it. Complete the Execution Worksheet online. NOTE: It is a little different from that of other worksheets you have been asked to develop.

9.2 Read the material on Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual theatre found in the Bel Jean packet on pages 23-24, as well as the material in the Study Guide. Write a summary of the material on a page linked to your Portfolio page.
